The motto is pathetic and ironic because it is using big words like splendid, molding and clear thinking men and Holden is exactly the opposite guy. He is failing all subjects except English. The motto is written for perfect students, but we know there are students with difficulties, either learning or social behaviour,so not everyone can belong to the perfect ones.
At Whooton school at Elkton Hills,Holden felt even more disconnected from the rest of the school.Describing teacher-parent meetings ,Mr.Haas the headmaster is greeting parents and judging them by their look and clothing. How important for real values is someone's look or their clothing.I can see Holden's frustration and disappointment with the world around him. With no one with strong personality around him to advise him ,he is becoming more and more desperate.
Then meeting Sally is another episode of lack of sensitivity and selfishness. She is not interested in what Holden has to say, she is too preoccupied with herself, she doesn't realize that he is on the edge and start thinking about suicide. He doesn't find motivation to keep him going. He hates school because they teach you that important thing is how to make more money to buy expensive stuff like cars.
Holden doesn't like movies and actors,he doesn't like acting,he thinks that movies are great illusion, what he wants is honesty and sincerity. And people are pretending to be sensitive and understanding, but Holden would say they are "secret snobs".Like the woman watching the movie and crying ,and at the same time being so insensitive to her son.
Those episodes leave a big impact on his already troubled life experiences. He keeps thinking negative about every situation he finds himself in.The positive experiences, like meeting the nuns don't live much trace,he keeps seeing negative things in everyone. What he needs is to come home and find shelter and strength to overcome his almost self-destructive urges.
