Journal 2 Quotes

"Among other things, you'll find that you're not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You're by no means alone on that score, you'll be excited and stimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now. Happily, some of them kept records of their troubles. You'll learn from them - if you want to. Just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It's a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn't education. It's history. It's poetry." ~J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye, Chapter 24, spoken by the character Mr. Antolini
It is the best solid advice Holden is getting from someone. His teacher Mr.Spencer was trying to be a wise and point out his mistakes, but fails from the reason he is trying to justify himself for failing Holden in history. He doesn't give him any valuable lesson.
He is loosing the opportunity for a good advice when meeting the nuns.If there is anything pure and innocent in his world ,that must be the women who gave up everything materialistic to serve people and community.Because he declares himself an atheist we can't expect him learning from the nuns,he even doesn't understand their way of life and he feels sorry for them.
What Mr.Antolini is saying that life experiences are sometimes more valuable then all the schools, assignments and teachers. If you have ability to learn from others who have troubled lives, you can beat the problem. But Holden needs to understand that not everything can be perfect.

His search for a perfect world ,free of hypocracy is like living in utopistic society ,the one that Sir Thomas More describes in his book A Truly Golden Little Book, No Less Beneficial Than Entertaining, of the Best State of a Republic, and of the New Island Utopia
As the word utopia means "no place", Holden won't be able to find such a perfect society.
